Distinguishing Male and Female Names
Students of English often have trouble with first names. First of all, it’s hard to tell if a name is male or female. Second, it’s hard to tell how it’s pronounced.
This guide gives an overview of some American English names which are similar—and in some cases, the same—between male and female names. If you’re not sure how to say one of them, ask your teacher or a native-speaking friend.
Group 1: Stress the male name on the first syllable, the female on the second (or third).
Group 2: Use the same stress for both male and female names.
Group 3: Use the same pronunciation for both male and female names.
